This particular topic might seem intimidating at first: dividing fractions. But guess what? Once you understand the straightforward process, it’s not that tough at all. Dividing fractions is a skill that can unlock a whole new level of math proficiency for you.

Dividing two fractions is the same as multiplying the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. You might be wondering, ‘What on earth is a reciprocal?’ Don’t worry too much about the fancy term. A reciprocal is simply a way to flip a fraction upside down. That’s right, the numerator becomes the denominator, and the denominator becomes the numerator. After finding that reciprocal, you’ll multiply the two numerators together. This means you take the top number of the first fraction and the new top number of the flipped second fraction and multiply them. Next, do the same with the two denominators. Multiply the bottom numbers together and then it is just a matter of simplifying your new fraction if necessary. This method of dividing fractions is known as the Keep Flip Change rule:

• Keep the first fraction exactly as it appears in the problem
• Flip the second fraction upside down
• Change the division sign to a multiplication sign
